Rising pop starlet Sabrina Carpenter making her headlining debut, and a new Canadian hard-rock act packed with veteran players are among the five concerts in November that would look good on anyone’s events calendar.
Here is the full list:
When: Nov. 4, 7:30 p.m. Where: Pacific Coliseum Tickets/info: ticketleader.ca
If you weren’t familiar with Sabrina Carpenter before her smash hit Espresso, you are now. The single from the American pop singer’s sixth studio album, Short n’ Sweet, is just one of the 12 songs on the album to all reach the U.S. Hot 100 chart. While the title is a play on the artist’s short stature and her least long-lived romantic relationships, it looks like her career and first headline arena tour herald the next megastar in the making.
When: Nov. 8, 9, 8 p.m. Where: Kay Meek Arts Centre, Grosvenor Theatre, 1700 Mathers St., W. Van. Tickets/info: kaymeek.com
Canadian folk rock hero Barney Bentall put the Cariboo Express together in 2006 as an old school travelling road show featuring top-tier roots and country artists taking turns swapping songs and stories while raising monies for charity. Over the years, the annual event has brought in over $2 million for worthwhile causes and entertained audiences with a who’s who of Canadian talent. Now Bentall focuses on his recent projects, including the new album Cosmic Dreamer which reached the No. 1 spot on the Roots Music Report’s Canadian chart.
When: Nov. 14, 7:30 p.m. Where: Rogers Arena Tickets/info: Ticketmaster.ca
Last year, Hamilton, Ont., act Arkells took home the Juno award for Group of the Year. Now the group is heading across Canada in support of its latest release, Laundry Pile. Never an act to bring anything less than a fully loaded night to fans, K. Flay will be the warmup act. Best of all, Arkells might pull out some of those great Disco Loadout, Volume 1 and 2 releases where they put a distinctive spin on such classic as Bruce Springsteen’s Dancing in The Dark.
When: Nov. 16, 17, 9 p.m. Where: The China Cloud, 524 Main St. Tickets/info: admitone.com
The Mbolon African Music Festival has it’s beginnings in Mali where it focused on presenting a variety of regional musics from the rich traditions of West Africa. Now this annual event has launched a satellite version in Vancouver that showcases Guinea, West Africa griot Kunda African Culture and Dance, Vancouver’s experimental Elastic Stars, Zimbabwean mbira player Kurai Mubaiwa and Juno-winning jazz guitarist Gordon Grdina performing solo oud.
When: Nov. 22, 8 p.m. Where: Great Canadian Casino, 2080 United Blvd., Port Coquitlam Tickets/info: Ticketmaster.ca
When he isn’t touring the world rocking the bass gig in Slash‘s band, former Age of Electric and B.C. Entertainment Hall of Fame member Todd Kerns is part of the new hard rock quartet Toque. Besides having a name that is knitted into the Canadian mind, the group has appeared on stages with everyone from Prism and Kim Mitchell, to co-writing with Derry Grehan of Honeymoon Suite on its song Broken. Plus, that car in the Can’t Stop It video is shweeeeet.
